U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona responds to 8th Circuit Court’s decision on the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE Plan.

Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona expressed his views on the recent ruling by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the Biden-Harris Administration’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan.

“The 8th Circuit’s decision to halt President Biden’s SAVE plan could have severe repercussions for numerous student loan borrowers struggling with high monthly payments if left unchallenged. It’s disappointing that politically-motivated lawsuits initiated by Republican officials are obstructing potential relief for millions of borrowers.

“Under the SAVE Plan, borrowers will be granted interest-free forbearance while our Administration vigorously defends the program in court. Regular updates will be provided to affected borrowers in the days ahead.

“Many borrowers used to default on their loans annually due to unmanageable payments. The SAVE plan represents a significant and urgently required initiative to address the flaws within our student loan system and enhance the affordability of higher education in the country. The Biden-Harris Administration is steadfast in its commitment to providing substantial relief to as many borrowers as possible. To date, we have authorized an unprecedented $169 billion in assistance for nearly 4.8 million Americans, encompassing educators, veterans, public servants, defrauded students, disabled borrowers, and more. Whether through increased Pell Grants or free community college, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and I remain dedicated to advocating for accessible college education – and our resolve is unwavering.”
