U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona reacts to Missouri and Kansas District Court decisions on the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE Plan

“The Kansas and Missouri District Court rulings are strongly opposed by us, as they impede certain aspects of the SAVE Plan aimed at assisting student loan borrowers in maintaining affordable monthly payments and preventing defaults. The Department of Justice will persist in vigorously defending the SAVE Plan. The SAVE Plan introduced by the Biden-Harris Administration is hailed as the most cost-effective repayment plan to date. SAVE was meticulously crafted to halve undergraduate loan payments, halt interest growth for those who make minimal or no payments, and expedite the forgiveness process for borrowers at risk. With SAVE, close to 8 million Americans, representing one-fifth of borrowers, are given financial relief that eases the strain of bills that often clash with essential needs. Despite the Department referencing Higher Education Act authority thrice in the last three decades to implement income-driven repayment plans, Republican officials and vested interests have filed lawsuits to prevent their constituents from reaping the benefits of this plan.”
