Oklahoma City Schools Provide Guidelines for Bible Teaching

In Oklahoma City, new guidelines from the school district mandate that teachers must reference the Bible’s historical and literary aspects only when state academic standards permit. Superintendent Jamie Polk stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality and objectivity, prohibiting the use of the Bible for preaching or indoctrination.

The focus is on a balanced, objective approach that respects diverse beliefs while adhering to both state requirements and federal laws. The directive, issued as teachers returned to work, emphasizes detailed lesson plans and staying within approved curriculum materials.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters’ order requires all Oklahoma districts to teach the Bible’s historical and literary value beginning in the 2024-25 school year. It also mandates classrooms to have copies of the Bible, the Ten Commandments, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution.

Walters’ initiative aims to enhance the existing state academic standards by delving deeper into the Bible’s significance. The guidelines seek to analyze biblical passages, explore its influence on Western civilization and American history, and integrate references in literature and fine arts.

Amid concerns regarding church-state separation and local curriculum autonomy, some school districts have decided not to expand Bible instruction beyond existing state standards. Polk’s guidance provides legal protection for teachers in case of complaints, emphasizing the necessity of documented lesson plans.

The Center for Education Law questioned the validity of Walters’ mandate, arguing that the state infringing on local district authority was not legally permissible. Polk’s statement alluded to another controversial announcement from Walters concerning a cost analysis of educating undocumented students.

Despite the contentious directives, Polk, with 36 years in education, remains focused on maintaining a productive relationship with the state Education Department to ensure students receive necessary support for their academic journey. The evolving challenges underscore the ongoing need for dialogue and understanding in navigating complex issues.
