MIT OpenCourseWare transforms perspective on teaching and university experience

Bernardo Picão became intrigued by online learning at a young age, after his father introduced him to a TED Talk on YouTube. His interest deepened when he discovered the transformative power of digital resources through MIT Open Learning.

Reflecting on his journey, Picão notes, “YouTube was my gateway to online learning, showing me the possibilities of gaining knowledge from the internet. At 15 or 16, my fascination with mathematics and physics led me to explore MIT OpenCourseWare playlists, which set me on a path of learning.”

MIT OpenCourseWare, under MIT Open Learning, provides a vast array of free online educational materials derived from over 2,500 undergraduate and graduate courses at MIT. Picão delved into subjects like linear algebra with renowned professor Gilbert Strang and varied courses including metaphysics, functional analysis, quantum field theory, and English. He credits OpenCourseWare for enhancing his educational experience during his studies in France and Portugal.

Having leveraged MIT’s resources, Picão has honed his scientific acumen, currently pursuing a master’s degree in physics at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, focusing on lattice quantum chromodynamics. His research involves precise computer simulations to study quarks. Post-master’s, Picão plans to pursue a doctoral program in the field.

At a recent symposium in Lisbon, Picão had the chance to meet a familiar face from an OpenCourseWare video, Krishna Rajagopal, the William A. M. Burden Professor of Physics and former dean for digital learning at MIT Open Learning. Picão expressed his gratitude for Rajagopal’s support of OpenCourseWare, emphasizing its significance in advancing MIT’s educational initiatives.

In his appreciation of OpenCourseWare, Picão highlights the diverse subject areas covered and the range of instructors available. He values the varied instructional styles, noting that learners can benefit from different perspectives to enrich their education.

Despite his research pursuits, teaching holds a special place in Picão’s heart. Drawing inspiration from OpenCourseWare, he enhances his teaching skills and connects with students of diverse backgrounds.

Picão reflects, “My outlook on teaching transformed through OpenCourseWare’s emphasis on disseminating knowledge beyond traditional restrictions. Teaching isn’t just about imparting information within classroom walls; it’s about sharing knowledge with everyone.”

Currently working as a teaching assistant, Picão appreciates how Open Learning extends educational opportunities globally. He recalls his early days of sharing knowledge with family members, underscoring how platforms like Open Learning can revolutionize education on a global scale.

For Picão, learning from MIT experts has deepened his understanding of complex subjects. While he acknowledges his access to quality education, he recognizes the invaluable role Open Learning plays in providing educational access to learners worldwide.

Expressing the significance of MIT’s OpenCourseWare and Open Learning, Picão emphasizes the democratization of education and the limitless learning possibilities available to all. He asserts, “MIT’s commitment to open-access education is a game-changer, offering unparalleled resources for self-study and exploration.”

Picão concludes, “The accessibility of OpenCourseWare may seem too good to be true, but it’s a testament to MIT’s dedication to sharing knowledge freely. There are no strings attached – sharing is paramount.”
