With over 180,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in California, and existing shelters only able to accommodate half, Renee Wang, a senior at The Bishop’s School in San Diego, California, set out to discover a more effective solution.

Her initiative, Rubix, influenced by the Rubik’s Cube and Lego, comprises a small pre-assembled residence with essential facilities like a kitchen and bathroom.

“Rubix is designed to offer self-sufficient living with respect for the homeless community,” Wang stated.

Operating off-grid through solar power and utilizing bamboo and recycled plastics for construction, Rubix boasts an inventive design that simplifies manufacturing, transport, and installation, making it cost-effective and efficient compared to other tiny home options available.

The inclusion of an independent plumbing system in Rubix enables its use in disaster relief scenarios.

Engaging with city officials and interested non-profit organizations, Wang aims to introduce Rubix in San Diego.

Raising funds for a life-sized prototype, Wang envisions a one-time price of $30,000, significantly lower than the yearly $50,000 upkeep cost of San Diego shelter beds.

Recognition for her Rubix project led Wang to receive a $25,000 scholarship from the Davidson Institute, a foundation fostering impactful contributions by talented youth.
