During the spring of 2023, Nick, a sophomore at a large public university in North Carolina, engaged in exploratory conversations with ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot, seeking to unravel deep psychological dilemmas and engage in discussions about human nature.

After having positive experiences, Nick considered ChatGPT as a helpful tool for on-demand emotional support and advice, similar to therapy.

He started turning to ChatGPT for relationship guidance and reassurance during social conflicts, finding solace and relaxation through the bot’s conversations.

ChatGPT became a go-to resource for Nick in distressing situations, offering him a sense of calm and support that he found extremely beneficial.

Young individuals like Nick are increasingly relying on AI companions for varied purposes, from academic queries to personal quandaries, and occasionally forming emotional attachments to these virtual entities.
