Oklahoma Universities to Offer Artificial Intelligence Degree Programs

Students in select public institutions in Oklahoma are set to have the opportunity to pursue undergraduate degrees in artificial intelligence.
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education sanctioned the introduction of degree programs in artificial intelligence at Rose State College, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and the University of Oklahoma on June 4th.
While artificial intelligence courses have been available in some universities, these newly approved programs mark the first official degree offerings in the state.
Dean of the Dobson College of Business and Technology at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Trisha Wald spearheaded the initiation of the program at the institution. Representatives from Rose State College and the University of Oklahoma were not accessible for comments.
The program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University can commence in the fall; however, due to the late approval, some of the new AI classes may commence in the spring.
Wald studied analogous programs in other states to formulate the curriculum for the new program. She mentioned, “It’s a multidisciplinary program, so it’s not just computer science courses. We’ve got higher level math, psychology, and philosophy courses, particularly on ethics. So it’s going to help us have more well-rounded individuals.”
The approval process spanned months, and the proposal had to showcase workforce demand to the Regents during the process.
Current statistics indicate that over 19,000 jobs in Oklahoma necessitate AI skills, with a projected 21% increase over the next decade.
The State Regents for Higher Education Chair, Jack Sherry, stated, “AI is rapidly emerging as a vital employment sector. New career opportunities in areas like machine learning, data science, robotics, and AI ethics are driving demand for AI expertise, and Oklahoma’s state system colleges and universities are answering the call.”
Governor Kevin Stitt expressed that these new programs will position Oklahoma’s students at the forefront of the AI industry.
The Governor commented, “These degree programs are a significant step forward in our commitment to innovation in education and will position Oklahoma to be a leader in AI. AI is reshaping every aspect of our lives, especially academics. I’m proud of the Board of Regents for ensuring Oklahoma’s higher ed students do more than just keep pace; they’ll lead the AI revolution.”
