Secretary Cardona issues statement before one year since Supreme Court ruling on College Affirmative Action Programs

Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona released a statement on the eve of the one-year mark of the Supreme Court’s decision on college affirmative action programs:

“Our higher education institutions shine brightest when they mirror the diverse tapestry of our country. This time last year, the Supreme Court made a significant shift by restricting a key tool used by colleges to foster dynamic, diverse campus communities and broaden the access to higher education for students of color, who frequently encounter disparities in our educational system. The ruling dealt a setback to the pursuit of equal opportunities and a fairer, more just nation.

“The Biden-Harris Administration remains steadfast in its dedication to ensuring educational opportunities for all Americans. Throughout the past year, I’ve been heartened to witness numerous colleges taking tangible steps to uphold educational diversity and equity in their recruitment and admissions processes, as well as fostering inclusive and supportive campus environments. In response to guidance provided by the Department subsequent to the ruling, many institutions adjusted their admission procedures to consider student accomplishments within the context of challenges and resilience, such as economic circumstances, available opportunities in their upbringing, personal encounters with adversity like racial bias, and other obstacles. Schools have initiated targeted recruitment initiatives and enhanced affordability through need-based financial aid while streamlining and enhancing transparency in financial aid systems for students. Additionally, recognizing the pivotal role of K-12 education in paving the way to higher education, as well as the significance of robust partnerships between higher education and K-12 institutions in expanding postsecondary access for students of color, has been reinforced.

“The Department commends these initiatives and looks ahead to our ongoing collaboration to actively bolster support for students of color and eliminate unacceptable disparities in higher education. The drive for a more inclusive system continues. Together, we will elevate standards for all students across the nation.”
