The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is pleased to introduce the 2024 cohort of HBCU Scholars, in celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary. This year, 110 exceptional students from 77 HBCUs nationwide have been chosen based on their outstanding academic accomplishments, leadership qualities, and commitment to their communities.
“Over the past decade, the HBCU Scholars program has recognized and supported the brightest and service-oriented minds from HBCUs,” stated U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “These 110 exceptional students embody Black excellence and inspire hope for the future. We are proud to stand behind them on their journey.”
The HBCU Scholars program, established in 2014, has empowered more than 500 students by providing invaluable opportunities for personal and professional development, mentorship, and networking. This year’s cohort, hailing from 23 states and 11 countries, was selected from a competitive pool of over 350 applicants and comprises a diverse range of academic disciplines and backgrounds, including STEM, humanities, social sciences, and the arts.
Recognizing the importance of fostering innovation and opportunity, the HBCU Scholar Program collaborates with NASA to support the cohorts. This partnership includes the Minority University Research and Education Project Innovation Tech Transfer Idea Competition (MITTIC), enabling HBCU Scholars to develop ideas commercializing technology from NASA that can benefit their campuses and communities.
Additionally, HBCU Scholars will participate in the 2024 HBCU Week National Annual Conference, themed “Raising the Bar: Where Excellence and Opportunity Meet,” held from September 15-19, 2024 in Philadelphia, PA. The conference aims to engage students in sessions focused on innovation, leadership, and personal and professional growth, providing opportunities for networking and showcasing talent.
“This year’s students exemplify the excellence and leadership synonymous with the HBCU community,” said Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Dietra Trent. “We look forward to a productive partnership throughout the academic school year.”
Following the conference, HBCU Scholars will engage in programs, events, and monthly master classes to enhance their professional development and access post-graduation opportunities with nonprofit, business, and federal agency partners, supporting the nation’s global competitiveness. Stay tuned for updates on the 110 HBCU Scholars’ activities as they represent the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
