U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona Comments on Supreme Court Filing for the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan
Emma Wordsmith
Official statement from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona:
The U.S. Department of Justice lodged an urgent plea with the Supreme Court yesterday to nullify the injunction imposed by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan. If this injunction stands, it will have a detrimental impact on borrowers who have diligently repaid their loans over a period of up to 25 years by denying the forgiveness that has been legally available for three decades.
We are unwavering in our support for borrowers and our advocacy for the most economical repayment solutions feasible for millions of individuals nationwide. To date, we have authorized $169 billion in assistance for nearly 4.8 million Americans eligible for relief through various programs, encompassing educators, veterans, and other public servants; students defrauded by their educational institutions; borrowers with disabilities; and others. President Biden, Vice President Harris, and I are resolute in our commitment to advancing college affordability for all.
