MSU State Singers to Present New Work by Renowned Swedish Composer Next Week

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Prepare to be mesmerized as the State Singers from the Mississippi State Department of Music showcase a fresh creation from esteemed Swedish composer Mårten Jansson in the upcoming week.

The State Singers, celebrated as MSU’s top choral-vocal group, will unveil Jansson’s latest composition at the “Requiem Novum” event on Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. The concert will take place at Starkville’s First Baptist Church, situated at 106 East Lampkin Street.

During his current residency with the MSU Music Department, Jansson will host a discussion before the performance. Guided by Phillip Stockton, MSU’s interim choral studies director, the choir will enthrall the audience with their rendition.

Jansson is a distinguished composer specializing in sacred music. His compositions have garnered international acclaim through presentations, publications, and commissions worldwide. Holding a master’s degree in music education from the Royal College of Music in Sweden, Jansson currently imparts his knowledge in voice, music theory, conducting, and choir at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Established in 2011, the State Singers have graced prestigious stages globally, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the White House, as well as international venues in countries like France, Czech Republic, Austria, and Spain.
