STARKVILLE, Miss.—Two students from Mississippi State University have been selected to participate in the highly competitive Fulbright UK Summer Institute program, known for being one of the most exclusive summer scholarship programs globally.
The participants from MSU include Payton Kelly-Van Domelen, a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and Kaleb Love, a junior majoring in computer engineering from Madison. Domelen will engage in a three-week program focusing on technology, innovation, and creativity at the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, while Love will delve into global sustainability for four weeks at the University of Exeter in England.
The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes cover significant expenses for attendees and offer specialized support and cultural education, encompassing comprehensive pre-departure guidance, enrichment experiences in the UK, and the opportunity to join the Fulbright alumni network.
David Hoffman, the director of MSU’s Office of Prestigious Scholarships, emphasized the uniqueness of having two MSU students consecutively chosen for these programs.
“Given the limited availability of spots, this selection is truly auspicious and showcases the exceptional preparation and distinct backgrounds that MSU students bring to these cohorts. Both Kaleb and Payton submitted exceptional applications showcasing their keen interest in the UK, intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm for their institute’s themes, and eagerness to learn from the people they encounter during their journeys. We take great pride in them representing Mississippi and MSU culturally, and look forward to observing how they apply their newfound insights in their future academic and professional pursuits,” said Hoffman, who also serves as an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures.
Kelly-Van Domelen, a Louis Hurst Jr. Presidential Scholar and a member of the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College, expressed her excitement about the program in Scotland due to its unique characteristics and area of study.
“I have long been captivated by the beauty of Scotland, including its landscapes, attractions, activities, and community engagement opportunities. I am thrilled to be immersed in the culture, engage with the locals, and explore new experiences,” she shared. “This summer program aligns well with my academic interests, making it a perfect match. As a biomedical engineering student, the program’s components are integral to fostering a solid work ethic, expanding knowledge and skills, and ultimately becoming an exemplary engineer.”
Love, a mentor in MSU’s Freshman Reach program and a member of the Shackouls Honors College, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and highlighted the significant impact he anticipates from the Exeter program on his professional growth.
“The University of Exeter boasts a rich culture and wealth of knowledge. The institution is a leader in global sustainability and actively works towards achieving its sustainability objectives,” Love remarked. “This program will enable me to acquire fresh perspectives and enhance my understanding of diverse cultures. I will acquire insights that will aid in generating sustainable and internationally relevant solutions. I eagerly anticipate applying my newfound knowledge to make a substantial impact in my community, state, country, and across the globe.”
The selection process for the US-UK Fulbright Commission involves a rigorous evaluation of applications and interviews. In awarding these opportunities, the commission seeks applicants who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a focused application, involvement in extracurricular and community activities, ambassadorial skills, and a commitment to giving back to their home country upon completion of the program.
